A recent study published by The Lancet Neurology revealed that more than 3 billion people in the world are living with various kinds of neurological conditions. Neurological conditions have become one of the leading causes of ill health and disability globally making it a serious ‘Global Health Burden,’ says the World Health Organisation (WHO). Since the tear 1990, there has been an increase in the percentage of disability, illness and premature death (known as disability-adjusted life years, DALYs) caused by neurological conditions by almost 18 per cent. According to WHO, more than 80 per cent of the neurological deaths and poor health conditions occur in countries with low and middle income. Health conditions are also poor due to lack of access in these regions.

Top 10 Prevalent Neurological Conditions In 2021, Study

A Lancet study published in 2024 stated that these following neurological conditions lead to poor health in most people in 2021:

  1. Stroke
  2. Neonatal encephalopathy (brain injury)
  3. Migraine
  4. Dementia
  5. Diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage)
  6. Meningitis
  7. Epilepsy
  8. Neurological complications from preterm birth
  9. Autism spectrum disorder
  10. Nervous system cancers

5 Neurological Disorders That Are A Serious Health Burden Globally

As per The World Health Organisation, these five neurological disorders have become a global health burden of late:

  1. Stroke: Stroke has become the second leading cause of death across the globe and the third leading cause of disabilities. Major factors behind stroke are changing climate and peak heat waves, dietary habits, physical activities or the lack of it, use of tobacco, alcohol and consumption of unhealthy foods.
  2. Meningitis: This condition leads to serious inflammation in the brain. It typically happens in the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord. There are three types of meningitis that can be deadly for your brain health: Fungal meningitis, parasitic meningitis and amoebic meningitis. This condition is life threatening. It can cause sepsis that can turn fatal and also lead to permanent damage to brain and nerves.
  3. Dementia:Dementia is a neurological condition that leads to memory loss. This progression is gradual and can become severe with old age. Causes of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is also rooted in diet, lifestyle, sleep health, exercise, genetic factors, environmental factors and old age.
  4. Epilepsy: Epilepsy is a chronic brain disease that leads to frequent and recurrent seizures in a patient. It can happen at any age and to any person from any region.
  5. Migraine: Incidences of migraine has been rising of late and has become a serious health burden. More and more young population complain of suffering rom migraine-like symptoms ranging from mild to very severe. Migraine is a health burden because there is no definitive cure of medicine that can stop it.
