Event was held Saturday, Aug. 23
About 50 people ran through Red Deer’s trail system in support of a program that provides free dental treatment and prevention services for local children and youths.
The first-ever 5K Smile Run for the Dental Outreach of Red Deer Program was held on the morning of Saturday, Aug. 23. The run began in the city’s Capstone neighbourhood, over the Taylor Bridge to Bower Ponds, then through the trails before returning to the original starting point.
“I’m aspiring to be a dentist and I was looking for ways to give back to my community,” said Ben Higham, race director.
“I’m also a runner for the University of Alberta track team. Dentistry and running just kind of naturally merged together — it made sense to put together a run for charity.”
Higham said he’d like to see the Smile Run become an annual event. In addition to draw prizes, this year’s event offered $100 prizes to the fastest male and female runners.
The Dental Outreach of Red Deer Program, run through Alberta Health Services, is important for local children and youths in the Red Deer area, Higham added.
“It supports children who wouldn’t otherwise have access to necessary dental care. They now have access through this program and it’s free,” he said.
Services offered through the program include:
— Free dental treatment services, such as x-rays, fillings and extractions;
— Free prevention services, inclduing sealants, fluoride and cleanings;
— Free education to reduce risk of cavities.
The program operates out of the Red Deer Johnstone Crossing Community Health Centre and is available for children and youth between the ages of 5 and 18 who have urgent dental needs. Eligibility is determined by income (take home) for family size. Clients are asked to provide proof of income.
“Free urgent dental care service is available for clients ages 5-18 years who have: no dental insurance, lower income or trouble paying; and, who have pain, infection, visible decay or broken teeth,” the AHS website states.
AHS also notes that volunteer opportunities are available within the program for dentists and registered dental assistants “who are committed to helping provide needed dental treatment for children in Central Alberta.” Dental professionals interested in volunteering for the DOoR program can email or call.
