Continuing its expansion of small-format hospitals, WellSpan Health is partnering with Emerus to build a facility in Newberry Township, York County.
A groundbreaking for the new hospital, WellSpan Health said will serve an underserved region, was held Wednesday.
“Establishing a hospital in northern York County is just one of the ways WellSpan Health is improving the health of the communities we serve. We are bringing 24/7 emergency and inpatient care with short wait times and onsite diagnostics, so community members no longer must travel to York or Harrisburg for high quality care,” said Victoria Diamond, senior vice president of WellSpan Health’s Central Region. “Our commitment to reimaging care includes ensuring we improve access to care and health care resources.”
Vic Schmerbeck, CEO of Emerus, a developer of small-format hospitals, said, “We are proud to partner with WellSpan, one of the nation’s leading hospital systems. We’re excited to help bring sustainable, compassionate, high-quality health care that will meet the needs of Pennsylvanians, now, and in the future.”
The hospital, being built at 36 Robinhood Drive in Newberry Township, just off Interstate 83 and adjacent to several businesses and growing residential areas, will include an emergency department as well as 10 inpatient beds in a smaller, more accessible footprint than traditional hospitals while still operating year-round.
It is one of three new hospitals WellSpan is building over the next two years, including facilities near Shrewsbury and Carlisle, all of which are projected to open in late 2025.
The improved access to care and wide range of services streamlined in a smaller setting should greatly improve the patient’s experience, WellSpan said. Small-format hospitals can see, treat and discharge patients in far less time than traditional larger hospitals, without reducing services or quality.
“At WellSpan, we are dedicated to simplifying access to health care, and our hospital design prioritizes convenience,” said Dr. David Vega, senior vice president and chief medical officer, WellSpan Health. “We aim to change the entire experience of emergency and hospital-based care and are excited to introduce a new, enhanced approach in Newberry Township.”
WellSpan Newberry Hospital will also provide diagnostic services including ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), X-ray and laboratory services. The emergency department will treat common emergency care needs such as falls, injuries, burns and infections, WellSpan Health said.
